[CW: themes of gender-based violence ]
Next month, I’m showing my art for the first time at Color Club Gallery in Chicago. The show is called “What Was She Wearing?” The show explores themes of trauma, gender, and expression and how they all relate to clothing. The work is incredibly personal.
I started making this work while in my artist residency in Feb/March and I see this as an ongoing project even after my show concludes. Making this work has helped me de-compartmentalize my experiences with assault, trauma, religion, gender, identity, and expression.
‘What Was She Wearing?’ asks the question of how clothing is used as weapon, control, and expression.
The show will feature mostly re-worked apparel art, and some 2D pieces. Guests can purchase the art, exclusive show merch, and other catdroool items. You can read more about the show in this Block Club article.
RSVP Now
Opening night is currently “sold out”, but you can join the waitlist or RSVP for Thursday or Saturday (closing) night!
Thursday Evening Programming
An RSVP is not technically required for entry for opening and closing, but is required for Thursday evening (and there are limited spots). On Thursday, there will be an intimate Q&A with my good friend Taylor Turnbull. She will be asking me all sorts of questions about the show, the process, my art practice, etc. Taylor and I have known each other since design school and our art paths have often overlapped, intertwined, and supported one another. Taylor is a brilliant illustrator and comic artist, as well as an inquisitive and talented cyanotype artist.
After the Q&A, Sima Cunningham will be playing a special acoustic set for us. I’ve always admired Sima as an exceedingly creative musician who makes up half of one of my favorite local bands– Finom. I had the chance to see an acoustic set of Sima’s last year around a cozy fire at the Chicago Athletic Association, and it was a very special night of warmth as art, music, and culture were gradually emerging post-pandemic.
If you can’t make it to any of these days, the gallery will have some limited hours during the week of May 15 TBA. Follow along on my instagram for those hours.
*A note on RSVP for opening and closing: RSVP is not technically required but is encouraged. There is a strict capacity limit at the gallery that we will be monitoring. If you are waitlisted, you can still come, there just might be a short wait at the door.
