This year I’ve been introducing new ways to spend less time on my phone. I see countless other people talking about this too. Ironically, I see them talking about it when I open my phone. So far I’ve implemented a 15 minute timer for Instagram and added it to a folder with TikTok I’ve titled “the bad apps”. I’ve been frequenting my local library every month and taking intentional “phone-less” walks.
Something I love about my phone is using it to take photos. Some days I take 50+ photos– filling up my camera roll with my cats, shadows on the sidewalk and in-progress sketches. I love taking pictures, always have; photography was my first art love. Since I was 16 I’ve been collecting cameras– digital, film, full frame, mirrorless, medium format, point and shoot, Polaroid, you name it. I love each one for their different quirks. But what’s the point of collecting cameras if lately they have been collecting dust?
Last week I felt a calling to replace my phone camera with my real camera. I carried it everywhere I went, capturing similar moments (cats, shadows) through a different perspective. Spoiler alert: it was extremely rewarding. Here’s what I captured.
My Cats
My cat loves to wait for me on the bath mat while I shower. Something about cats being afraid of water so when their humans shower they worry about them getting wet, waiting outside to make sure they’re ok. It’s probably not that deep, cats don’t really care about anyone but themselves. Regardless, it’s so cute. Here’s my cat taking a bath on the bath mat after I bathed myself.

Spring!
I personally really enjoy the gray-ness of spring. It makes the color bursting through feel so much more bold, and the tiny little buds on trees feel so full of hope against the backdrop of dreary sky. When the sun peaks through and shines its hardest, it feels like an incredible gift.

I did the same thing last week and it brought me so much joy! I'm excited to keep it going. I also need to tell you that I bought one of your coloring books from Lot'sa when I came in a few weeks ago and I color in it regularly — another thing bringing me so much joy right now!
My camera gets delivered tomorrow and I soooo want to do this. My favorite thing in general to take pictures of is my cat anyways
