It’s official. The seasonal depression finally came for me. I was fending it off for weeks, but the levy broke. If you’re reading this from a Midwestern state right now, there’s a good chance you feel the same. It’s ok. It’ll pass.
Don’t worry, I’m still out here romanticizing the textures and shapes of winter – even if I wish it was less cold outside.
Yesterday I dropped off February’s Catdroool Club mail. February’s art is a mad-lib love letter to yourself. A valentine from me to you– to you. Valentine’s day has come and went, but self love is forever.
I’m currently working on March’s art (I’m a little behind, shhhh). I’m struggling because March is such a weird time, and it’s not even here yet. It’s in-between, ambiguous, moody. I kinda love that about March. I wanted to make some black and white art about this notion, but opted to draw some daffodils instead. I’m sure my club members would rather open something vibrant while winter slugs along.
I’m reminding myself right now to revisit old art that never saw the light of day, instead of always focusing on making new things. What can it teach me? Can I give it new life? I came across these collages I made in 2022 and I’m in love with them.

In the world of “new” art, I have been working on a very exciting project, that should be launching soon. My friend Steph runs a vending machine business in Chicago – filling the city with painted machines that vend art. I was selected by a Revolution Brewing to paint the machine that will land in their Taproom. I’ve had a blast painting this machine, and can’t wait for its unveiling.

In other news:
I’m currently reading The Nickel Boys. It’s gut-wrenching and devastating, but I’m glad I’m reading it.
Every year I make a personal playlist for songs from that year. Every day I collect new songs and old favorites, creating a soundtrack for my year. When I don’t know what to listen to, it’s nice to hit play and let it take me away.
A couple weeks ago Lot’sa unveiled a new show, called A Light Exists. It features more than 20 candleholders from artists in Chicago and beyond. It’s a reminder to me and my community that in dark times, try to find a light. Come check it out if you’re in Chicago!
Thanks for reading, and hang in there.
The vending machine is such a fun project. Can’t wait to see it!
So good meeting you at Lot'sa tonight! Hoping to attend a class or drawing night soon 🤗 And solidarity with the seasonal depression sneaking up on you — I'm feeling the same! Thanks for spreading some goodness during these weird times ✨
